On Friday, 3 October 2025, pianist Mengqing Nie, a doctoral researcher at the University of Bristol, will collaborate with Prof Cheng Yu and the other musicians from the London Youlan Qin Society in a special lunchtime concert titled “China in Black and White.”

The performance explores the dialogue between Chinese folk melodies and Western piano traditions, offering a rare encounter between East and West through sound. The programme highlights works from the Cultural Revolution period (1966–1976) — a defining era for Chinese piano transcriptions — while also presenting fresh reinterpretations of traditional Chinese music.

By bringing the expressive voice of Chinese plucked-string instruments into conversation with the piano, the concert creates a unique sound world that blends heritage and innovation, tradition and modernity. Audiences can expect evocative textures and musical storytelling that transcend boundaries of time and culture.
